Normally,
this kind of release just screams too good
to be true. You have the slick baby blue digipak with clean
artwork - and inside, a really nice booklet - all in full color
complete with lyrics. I mean, I've seen this kind of marketing
before with bands - but the deal is I want to hear some decent
songs and view nice artwork. Don't we all?
On
Love Is Not Enough [the giant heart
on the cover should have told ya'], Portland's Blue
Skies For Black Hearts deliver an album that can compete
with the albums complete visual design. Displaying a potent formula
of emotional alt-rock, this four-piece cross between down tempo
tunes like the "Mary Tyler Moore meets Betty Page"
quoting "The More You Say You Know" and
Summerteeth-era Wilco on "When Your Heart Breaks".
Yes, the emphasis on broken / forgotten hearts [hear:
"Back To New Orleans"] is by far a theme on Love
Is Not Enough ["Everything has been turned upside down /
When your heart breaks it makes no sound, no sound, no sound"]
All
said - we are presented with a promising album that reveals another
fine side of Portland, Oregon's colorful atmosphere... wurlitzer
in tow. "You know you so got it".
