Happy Hollow

"Thank you for coming today. First off, before we take the daily
tide and offerings, could our Christ-believing attendees please rise.
Oh my - that's a good 90% of you. Next, could our W. Bush approving
attendees rise - if you are not already standing. Yes, that's
what I thought. Why do you people - you working class,
borderline poverty human beasts of the year two thousand and six - still
have faith in anything? What we need to do next is burn this
motherfucking chapel down to the ash of its roots - and that will start..
right.. . now."
"It's time to stick a fork in the merciless socket of time"
Tim Kasher and Co. may as well tell us that Saint Nick was a jolly old
creature dreamt up by our bitterly divorced parents as he is teaching
us the truth about the local preacher ["At Conception"], evolution!
["Big Bang"] and the core meaning of our days ["Dorothy
at Forty"]. You'd think these Cursive fellas were
born and raised in Lynchburg, Virginia with all the open-minded thought
towards "our Father who were'th created". The truly
scary part is the conviction by which these 4 grown men [yes, cellist
and fifth member Gretta
Cohn was sadly told not to return - in her place are horns and,
surprisingly, a gospel choir!] unveil these time proven facts about
creation and our purpose in life.
Undoubtedly a Cursive album from start to finish, with Ted Stevens fronting
vocally on three songs [he wins big on "Flag and Family"]
- Happy Hollow
is as artistic a statement as any Cursive outing from the archives to
date. It's just a shame the guys had to oust a talented and admired
member in the process. The good, the bad and the ugly.
"So if you stayed away on holiday, we could get on with it.
I mean we could evolve like this if you'd just call it quits" -
from "Retreat!".
