YETI, an "enthused art, music, writing
and other stuff" publication is a true pleasure. Sightings are
somewhat rare, as YETI is published three times yearly, but
with each meeting one will come away with new insight on an incredible
culture just burgeoning beneath the leaves and stones we seldom take
the time to turn over and look upon. A vast array of topics are covered
with equal passion. Illustrations adorn the pages between short stories,
interviews and, a play follows tour diaries and comics. Its a forum
of inclusion, there exists no single-minded vision.
Publisher-Editor and a man of many interests [see
his writings on MBVs
Loveless in the ongoing 33
1/3 series], Mike McGonical, contributes
a story of an enigmatic gospel-blues preacher, Rev. Louis Overstreet.
After receiving a vision from the Lord, the Reverend taught himself
to play guitar and led his four sons as his backing choir, in powerful
blues-based gospel. The music - as Overstreet stated - was "gifted"
to him from God. McGonical describes his style as,"...forceful,
rhythmic, totally bluesy and tranced-out". McGonical's account
is that of a true fan spreading a good word about a man whose intention
was to spread the 'good word' with a vision, a guitar and his kin.
Will Sheff, of Okkervil River, provides detailed personal writings
from his tour diary. His writing is a frank portrayal that provides
some acuity into what life is like as a touring band. The claustrophobia
of the van, strange sleeping arrangements and, seas (or sparse puddles)
of new faces every night, becomes mind numbing. Trying to maintain
relationships on the road seems the hardest though. Will tells some
hard luck stories that leave you feeling as if you've just had a good
heart to heart with a close friend.
There are so many more wonderful contributions to this publication,
great interviews with Chris Grigoroff of Souled American, Dan Bejar
of Destroyer and, brilliant "science/whatever-the-fuck-you-want-to-call-it
fiction" writer, Octavia Butler. Its unfair not cover all contributions
with equal attention, but this review could not hope to hold your
attention in near the fashion YETI 4 is capable of.
In addition to the wondrous writing and artworks contained within
the 242 perfect-bound pages, there is also with each
issue, an accompanying CD. With every issue YETI lays a beautiful,
illustrious golden egg. Contributions include: Kathrina Tunicata,
Radio Four (not the Gang of Four rip-off), Destroyer (x2),
Bobby Birdman, Bright, Califone, Alela Diane, Dolphin Band, Michael
Hurley with Tara Jane O'Neil, Ghosting, Fauna Polly, Somos Marquis
Homos, Gerhard Trede and his Electronic Instruments, Rob Walmart,
The Blow, We March, The Golden Bears, We/Or/Me, Okkervil River, The
Plants, Page France, Fly Ashtray, Souled American, Reverend E.W. Clayborn,
Valet, Theo Angell and an unknown Kenyan field recording. You can
