She, Sir
Who Can't Say Yes.
[ She,

Fans of shoegaze will instantly find a kindred soul in the Austin based
band known as She, Sir. Their debut EP, Who Can't
Say Yes. is filled with all the prerequisites: A]
Lush, intricate songwriting marked by densely stacked layers of sound?
Check. B] Ethereal and sweetly
sung vocals (provided by the band's two main members, M. Grusha and
Russell Karloff) that seem to rocket straight off the Earth and into
the clouds? Check.
Over
the course of six songs, She, Sir creates a sound that's instantly recognizable,
but all the more enjoyable because it is done so well--urgent, focused
(no song goes past the 5:00 mark) and methodically structured and detailed.
"Lieutenant" with its wall of fuzzy guitars - driving and
discordant - and crisp, razor-sharp drums, moves along at lightspeed
while vocals slowly drift and float underneath, and "It's My Way
of Staying Connected" swirls in a heavenly wave of distortion--sweeping
and crashing before it slowly retreats. Who Can't Say Yes.
is impressively fluid and almost epic sounding in such a short amount
of time--totalling only 25 minutes.
Based
on the strength of this debut effort, and coming out of the dynamic
Austin scene, it will only be a matter of time before word about this
band spreads--and She, Sir is entirely deserving of the praise.
